Obviously a classic, given the windows and whitewalls. Whoever did this should be condemned to auto hell.

Early ‘60’s Thunderbird?
EDIT: the front wheel opening does not appear to match.

Falcon was the first thing that came to mind

It’s a GM of some sort because the top of the wheel arch trim is flat.
Edit: nvm.

Corvair?

Wing window/A-pillar shape suggests pre-65 Corvair, but it’s hard to tell.

Antenna base is a match, wheel arch fits the profile but the Corvair has a gentle curve compared to the wreck. Side window seems to match, but at this angle it looks like the windshield has a sharper curve at the sides than your photo.
might be a Corvair, or a car similar to it.

CTSenVy and fintail nailed it, pre’-65 Corvair. Monza fender emblem is a match.

No, look at windshield frame and rubber shape at the lower corner. Corvair has a hard corner, that thing has a long curve going out.

Crap, nevermind again, damn this one is hard to solve!

It’s definitely a Corvair that’s had some extras added to it, like the chrome trim on the wheel well archs. The Monza emblem on the wrecked Corvair is different from your examples, but there have been variations over the years:
This one appears to be the closest match to the wreck’s.
Also, passenger side door appears to be open since there was a female riding shotgun when the accident happened. So I’m guessing that’s why the side A-pillar window looks narrower.

Am I tired or is that news article written in an extremely confusing way?

That happens with some local news outlets when they report on something that is less than an hour old.
